I was recently asked to write an article about how Christian churches are helping people in need: the homeless, the poor, struggling single-parent families, etc. I need 8-12 examples and I don't have many right now.
Is your church doing something to serve those less fortunate? I hope the answer's yes. Would you take a minute to let me know the basic details? I hope the answer's yes to that, too.
Assuming two yesses, you can either just post a reply here as a comment or email me at buzz@standardpub.com. I'll choose some of the best examples and contact those churches to get more information.
Thanks! You were wondering what to get me for Christmas, and now it's all done.

Hey Jennifer, this is Melissa Reyes...I believe you've worked with my parents in the past through NACC..??
There is a church across town called Southeast Christian Church that has consistently worked with the homeless of Orlando. One guy, Brandon Hoyt has this ministry where he gathers a few volunteers every week and brings them downtown to distribute clothes, food and toiletries to homeless people. He always includes about 15-20 minutes of preaching the gospel as part of the ministry.
I don't know more than that, as I've only volunteered there a couple of times last year, but I was impressed by their consistency.
Also, Journey Christian Church in Apopka, FL was (to my knowledge) doing a weekly homeless ministry in downtown Orlando as well.

This is perfect--thanks so much. I was just emailing with your mom a week or two ago--tell her I said hi.
In Neoga Illinois we have 2 women named Amy and Vickie who provide clothing for anyone of any age who needs this service. We are in the poorest county in the state so there is always a need to be met. Both of these women work tirelessly and at times to make sure anyone who is in need will find what they are looking for. At times they have donated their own money to this ministry.
This particular ministry is the greatest outreach ministry to the poor in our church and in our community.
Jennifer,
You may want to contact the Contact Church of Christ in Tulsa, Oklahoma (http://www.contactchurch.net or phone #918-447-1130). It's an accapella church of Christ that is devoted to urban ministry. It has a food pantry, clothing room, 2 recovery houses for men with addictions, a ministry to new mothers, and other ministries to the urban poor in Tulsa. I hope this is helpful.
